The 3-day Sahara Desert tour to Erg Chigaga from Marrakech will begin in the morning at 8:00 AM from your hotel or riad. We will head towards the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the famous Tizi N-Tichka Pass to reach Pasha Glaoui’s Telouet Kasbah. From there, we’ll continue to Ait Benhaddou, traveling along an ancient caravan trail and through the beautiful Ounila Valley, which is bordered by traditional Berber villages. After driving through Ouarzazate, we’ll stop for a tasty lunch before continuing south over the Tizi-n-Tinfifte Pass to Agdez. As we descend from the pass, you’ll be amazed by the view of the expansive oasis and the numerous palm trees, marking the start of the Draa Valley. This fertile valley is home to thousands of date palms, producing over 25 varieties of high-quality dates. The harvest season runs from September to a few months after, making it the perfect time to stop in Agdez and enjoy the freshest dates. We will continue through the Draa Valley, passing rows of palm trees and ancient Ksours (fortified villages), until we reach Zagora at the end of the day. Here, we’ll have dinner and spend the night at the Zagora Standard Desert Camp.
Our departure will begin after breakfast as we head towards Tamgroute, where we will visit the Zaouia, an ancient Koranic library, the traditional pottery workshops, and an underground Kasbah. From there, we will continue on to M'hamid, the gateway to the desert and the point where the paved road ends. For lunch, we’ll enjoy a barbecue in an oasis, a perfect way to refresh and experience the desert’s unique atmosphere. Next, we embark on a thrilling 60 km off-road journey towards the majestic Erg Chegaga dunes, rising 300 meters high. The route will take us through a diverse array of desert landscapes, including ergs (sand dunes), hammadas (stony deserts), and scattered oases. These dunes are far from civilization, offering an authentic and peaceful desert experience where the vast silence and expansive sand dunes are truly awe-inspiring. Upon arrival at Erg Chegaga, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a camel ride around the towering dunes for about an hour, giving you a chance to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Sahara. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a traditional dinner at the Erg Chigaga Standard Desert Camp, where you’ll spend the night in your private tent. The camp features comfortable beds, beautiful Moroccan furniture, and a serene ambiance, enhanced by candlelight. It’s the perfect setting to relax and reflect on the beauty and tranquility of the desert.
After breakfast, our desert adventure continues as we head west, traversing another 90 km of the Sahara desert. Along the way, we’ll pass through a variety of landscapes, including the vast Lake Iriki, where you'll likely encounter shimmering mirages in the heat. We'll also pass by the mountains, fossil sites, and nomadic families living in their tents, offering a glimpse into traditional desert life. Our route follows part of the historic Paris-Dakar Rally track, adding a sense of adventure to the journey. Next, we make our way to Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert, where the paved road begins. Here, we'll stop for a picnic lunch in an oasis, surrounded by the refreshing desert landscape. After lunch, we continue towards Ouarzazate, passing through the town of Taznakht, known for its traditional Berber rug-making. We will also pass through the village of Amerzgan, offering another insight into the local culture.
